Portsmouth is a city that is driven by its history through and through. The city was originally founded as a town by an act of the Virginia General Assembly, on behalf of the 1752 by Col. William Crawford. All that remained in the city back then was a church, a market, a courthouse and a jail. Today, a large portion of the city is controlled by the U.S. Navy.
The city currently maintains a number of historic buildings; this includes the Pass House that was built by Judge James Mrdaugh in 1841, which housed the Union Troops from 1862-1865.
The Olde Towne Business and Historical District is located in the downtown area of the city, where a number of preservation and redevelopment has gone underway. A number of old hotels have been renovated and have notably been identified for maintaining their historical integrity, architecture and ambience. You can also find the African-American Methodist Movement started at Emanuel AME Church, which was built by the slaves and free men. It is considered to be the second-oldest building in all of Portsmouth.
